Savage Mill inhabits a unique niche in Howard County. It’s not only a shopping and activity destination, but also a historic attraction with a personal touch. Still managed by the same family that purchased the complex over 70 years ago, the Mill is able to creatively partner with individuals and organizations on projects that meet the needs and interests of our community. These partnerships build important connections while enriching the visitor experience.
Education and the Arts
Supporting education and the arts is one area we’ve focused on this past year. In addition to hosting the first-ever month-long Bollman Bridge Elementary School Art Show in our retail space this spring, we worked with several other Howard County schools to bring free musical performances to the community.
Local High School
Things kicked off in February with the music department from Oakland Mills High School. Students from the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Advanced Guitar Ensemble brought a lovely afternoon performance to the New Weave building, our main retail space.
The entertainment continued in the spring with two year-end fifth grade lunchtime musical performances outside on the patio.
Local Elementary Schools
In early May, Centennial Lane Elementary School returned for the second year with a talented performance of jazz ensemble, advanced orchestra, chorus, and concert band. In late May, Mill visitors had an additional treat – a first-time performance by nearly 100 students from St. John’s Lane Elementary School, who regaled with a wide variety of music, including marches, patriotic music, and pop and movie favorites.
We’re excited to see what school partnerships present themselves in the coming year. In the meantime, we hope everyone has a fabulous summer break!
